RISE UP

AMONG THORNS

Text from Wild Week Home Page

In the midst of a youth culture struggling with fears of acceptance, emotional pain, and even physical violence in their homes and schools; the members of Among Thorns are part of a new contemporary praise and worship movement sweeping through youth groups across the country. The acoustic pop blend of this new band's self-titled release accentuates a collection of songs already reaching kids in a fresh and exciting way.

Hailing from their home state of Texas, Among Thorns band members Jason Harrison, Matt Gilder, Darin Sasser, Brandon Eller, Gary Ishee, and David Childress have been performing together in front of large youth events for nearly three years. Born out of a college Bible study, the group has come full circle with the release of their debut album. Among Thorns is also the first project to come from Here to Him Music's new relationship with SirReal Records. distributed nationally with Provident Music Distribution.

Among Thorns currently tours nationally leading thousands of high school and college students into a style of praise and worship that is rapidly becoming part of a larger musical movement within churches and youth groups today.

"I don’t think any of us really planned to grow up and be worship leaders, but God changed the desires of all our hearts," explains lead vocalist Jason Harrison. "We came together as a band for a Bible study. It was !hen that God began to call us into worship. He used the Bible study as a tool to equip and prepare us for what He had called us to do."

Keyboardist Matt Gilder adds, "God had everything to do with the timing of Among Thorns. People are so hungry right now. There are a lot of things happening that are drawing both kids and adults into worship. The biggest thing that keeps me going is watching people experiencing God in a new way. We want to lead people into a deeper time of worship and intimacy before God, It is fantastic to see the renewal that is happening."

"I knew I was called into music," guitarist Darin casser shares, "but when I started seeing people respond to what we were doing, I realized that I had a different calling than artist-driven music. We were called to be worship leaders. Kids are going through so much right now, and I believe they have a desire to know something more. They are being drawn and are realizing that it's not drugs, sex, or parties that will fill them. They want something else. God is opening our generation's eyes and showing us it's time to get right with Him."

Among Thorns' debut project showcases the bard's writing ability through heartfelt lyrics that address God directly. Songs like "Embrace This Place," "Start A Fire," "Rain Down," "You Are," and "Shelter Me'' are all well-crafted conversations with God set against a backdrop of acoustic pop/roc/alternative melodies. The album contains an eclectic mix of songs and even ventures into a Celtic mood with the peaceful "Call To You."

"We never put a limit on what God can do," Darin says. "Our vision is to reach millions of people, and if this is the way God chooses to do it, then we are just going to be thankful and grateful for whatever He does."

"We don’t have a big agenda," Jason concludes. "We just hear story after story from people that we meet each night. We've been doing this long enough to know that at each event, on each night, there is probably someone there who is at the end of their rope. People are hungry to know God, and if He can use us to help lead those people to His throne, then that's what we are called to do."

With the release of Among Thorns, the band will continue to tour steadily throughout the country. In addition to youth and college events and conventions, Among Thorns will host summer camps with Evangelist Ken Freeman, traveling to locations in Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Illinois.

Along their musical journey, this group continues to venture into uncharted territory in their mission to reach a new generation with a fresh approach to glorifying God.
