Trekkies have always marveled over the brave women in Starfleet. Their beauty and brains were admired, adored and obsessed over. Two women, however, beat the other officers hands down. The two most popular Star Trek women of all times were voted as Doctor Beverly Crusher, played by Gates McFadden, and Captain Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew. Both of these characters shared much in common--self reliance, authority, and of course beauty.
Cheryl Gates McFadden was born March 2, 1949 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She was privately schooled and, while in college, studied theatre in France. Since then, McFadden has written, directed and choreographed many plays on and off Broadway, and landed a lead role in the hit TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994). She is still an active actress, guest starring on many popular shows. Gates and husband John Talbot have one son, James Clevland McFadden-Talbot.
Kate Mulgrew, the 2nd child of 8, was born April 29, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa. Kate left Iowa at 17 to study acting in New York and attended the Stella Adler Conservatory at New York University. After only a year, however, she left the university to begin her professional acting career. Mulgrew has starred in various shows and plays, included her most recent role as Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek Voyager. Kate, a divorced mother of two, now resides in Hollywood, California. Mulgrew recently married former Ohio County Commissioner Tim Hagan.
